Sonal Gupta is a solutions oriented journalist and documentary filmmaker with a passion for using media to empower communities and advocate for equity. From the sweltering heat of India to the freezing Canadian winters and with various stops in between, Sonal has worn many hatsdirector, producer, researcher, translator, you name it.
With a Master's in Journalism from UBC and filmmaking experience in Los Angeles, she is passionate about crafting narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. She co-authored the "Empowerment Journalism Guide" with the Global Reporting Centre, which was awarded the Gold Anthem Awards in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion category. Her documentary The Artist Motel, published in The Tyee,was a finalist for the Canadian Association of Journalists' Student Award of Excellence.
Sonal is currently producing a film on improving perinatal care for marginalized communities in Canada and is actively seeking funding to expand the project.
Beyond film and journalism, by training with organizations like the Solutions Journalism Network and Story Money Impact, she is contributing to the future of solutions journalism and filmmaking in Canada and globally.
