About
GABRIELA CAVANAGH is an award-winning documentary director, cinematographer and editor with a focus on projects blending performance and vérité.
REBBECA, her feature directorial debut, is a cinematic immersion into the mind of Becky G — one of this generation's most powerful voices in Latin Music (Live Nation). As Becky embarks on her most personal album to date—her debut Mexican regional album— she dives deep into her roots, reliving both beautiful memories and a complicated past. Following the film’s premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, the film will screen in over 1200 theaters in 24 countries (Trafalgar Releasing).
Previously, she edited, shot and produced WICKET (Winner: Audience Award for Best Documentary at Frameline) about legendary breakdancer, Bboy Wicket. Prior to that, she directed and edited OtroLado (Otherside) — a short film profiling three of Cuba’s most celebrated dancers after their decision to leave the national company to form their own trio. Part documentary, part performance, OtroLado is a behind-the-scenes-look as they test the boundaries of contemporary dance, friendship and art.
Previously, she developed and produced NightGowns (Quibi). Part-performance, part documentary, the 8-part series follows drag queen sensation Sasha Velour and her drag ensemble as they craft the lip-sync numbers of their dreams. The series was called “among the most life-affirming shows you could find on any platform” by the New York Times. In 2022, she produced a critically acclaimed episode of Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi (Hulu) set in Puerto Rico — the season was nominated for a Primetime Emmy (Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series, 2023). Gabriela also directed Sustained Outrage (PBS, 2020), an award winning short film about a family-owned, Pulitzer prize winning local newspaper in West Virginia and its fight for survival. In 2021, she edited three short films for Academy Award nominee Stanley Nelson, one of which was nominated for an Emmy (“Women’s World of Boxing”).
For three years, Gabriela worked as a Development Producer at the two-time Academy Award nominated production company, The Documentary Group. She has worked closely with talent such as Shakira, Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, Sabrina Carpenter, Sasha Velour, Sasha Colby, Girl in Red, Padma Lakshmi, and Emily Ratajkowski.
