Synopsis

Wide in the Sun is a short documentary film which observes City Island Oyster Reef (CIOR), a community-based environmental organization in the Bronx, NY. The organization’s goal is to restore once-abundant oyster reefs - now declined to less than 1% of their population - to the Long Island Sound surrounding City Island. The CIOR restoration actions documented over a seven-year period include water quality monitoring; oyster growth measurement; dive surveys of sea floor sedimentation, silt, and pollution; fish surveys; spat counting, oyster dissection, cage winterization, and, finally, pilot oyster reef facilitation at two selected sites.

Director

Traci Hercher is a filmmaker and educator whose essay films explore systems of power and belief by way of portraiture. She is a Lecturer in the Cinema Department at Binghamton University. In 2021, she received a MacDowell Fellowship and a Lightpress Grant. Her films have screened internationally at festivals and venues including The DocYard, Walker Art Center, San Diego Underground Film Festival, Experiments in Cinema, Process Festival, Revolutions per Minute Festival, AcreTV.org, Artists’ Television Access, The Nightingale, and Poetics and Politics Documentary Research Symposium at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
