Seagrass is an “ecosystem engineer” with a profound impact on the livability of coastal waters wherever its roots pierce the seabed, supporting rich webs of marine life. But what initially drew my attention to this oft overlooked angiosperm was its strength as a carbon sink. Composing the 2nd most efficient ecosystem for capturing and storing carbon in the world, seagrass meadows are an indispensable beyondhuman partner in combatting the biodiversity and climate crises.

Implementing this potent nature-based solution is relatively simple, not to mention gratifying, relying on cheap technology of which humans have had command for millennia: plant propagation. Tried-and-true, seagrass proliferation also presents little risk of unforeseen consequences, only known benefits. Making ethical techniques for seagrass meadow expansion readily available to innumerable concerned, driven citizens globally could thus be a game changer in the fight ordinary people are waging against ecological collapse, governmental inertia, and corporate harm. The seagrass dance hence aims to redistribute this knowledge developed by applied ecologists to the broader public. Over 70 minutes, lush imagery blooms into a poetic, thorough, unconventional instructional manual that can aid non-experts in replicating the process, democratizing responsible communal seagrass meadow restoration as a form of resistance at a moment when grassroots interventions are urgently needed.

In the lineage of Bernhard and Hilla Becher, James Benning, Edward Burtynsky, Harun Farocki, and Sharon Lockhart, the documentary’s formal compositions and durational shots ruminate on the social, temporal, tactile, and visual pleasures that come from the human enhancement of planetary health. Framing prioritizes hands, gestures, bodies, repetitive motions rather than faces, transforming the routines of dedicated environmental guardians into a ritualistic, anonymously-danced choreography, into which viewers are able to transpose themselves. A close-to-real-time back half—where the emptying of a tank becomes a monumental event—produces an alternative attentional economy similar to that which arises from participation in this type of labor, contrasting the distracted gaze nurtured by capitalism and consumerism with an affectionate, patient, scientific and artistic one. A subtle surreality also infuses the documentary, encapsulated by a refusal to locate the facility on which the film concentrates; a shifting narrative voice, built from statements by those featured in the film, then re-recorded in multiple languages; and an oscillation between didacticism and reverie. These elements gently suggest that a space like this, a job like this, a tenderness like this could exist anywhere and everywhere coastal, if only we choose to meet the slow violence of the anthropogenic emergencies confronting us with imagination and playfulness, rather than resignation.

The result of all of these aesthetic choices and mixture of styles is a film that stays with the viewer beyond the theater into the shallows that surround us, possessing the potential to transform passive spectators into dynamic participants in ecological repair by not only empowering them with the information necessary to act, but the spark of desire to do so.
