The film follows four background actors as they navigate long days, moments of mistreatment, and memorable encounters with celebrities while preparing for the Los Angeles Union Background Actor Awards, affectionately known as “The Blurries.”

Through their personal journeys, the film reveals background acting is both a craft and an essential entry point into the entertainment industry. The subjects share the skill, patience, humor, and resilience required to create believable worlds, often while remaining uncredited and undervalued. The film places their experiences within the broader history of background work, with perspectives from high-profile actors, stand-ins, crew members, casting professionals, SAG-AFTRA leaders, and entertainment-industry advocates.

As the awards ceremony approaches, the film’s focus expands to the growing threats facing this community. Artificial intelligence and digital replicas raise questions about consent, ownership, and whether human performers can be replaced altogether. At the same time, productions leaving Los Angeles have reduced local opportunities, placing further strain on workers already fighting for stability, fair treatment, and recognition.

The journey culminates at The Blurries, the one night of the year when background actors move from the edges of the frame to its center. The ceremony is joyful, funny, and deeply affirming, but it also underscores what is at stake: whether these workers will continue to have a place in the industry they helped build.

By using a grassroots awards show as its narrative spine, the film offers an intimate and unexpected perspective on some of Hollywood’s most urgent labor and technological challenges. Rather than examining the industry from the top down, it looks through the eyes of the people most frequently seen and least often heard, celebrating their artistry while asking what is lost when the humans who make our stories feel real are treated as replaceable.

Background actors are at the heart of urgent conversations about artificial intelligence, digital replicas, consent, and the decline of production in Los Angeles, yet their perspectives are rarely centered. Decisions being made now could fundamentally reshape their livelihoods and determine whether future productions continue to rely on human performers to make their worlds feel authentic.

Having briefly worked as a background actor, I began this project to honor a community that is essential to storytelling but too often treated as invisible or replaceable. Throughout filming, I realized again and again that audiences need to understand the human cost of these industry changes through the people whose work makes film and television feel real.

The film makes these complex labor and technological issues accessible through an emotional, character-driven story that follows four background actors and culminates at the Los Angeles Union Background Actor Awards. This celebratory narrative gives audiences an inviting entry point into a larger conversation about dignity, recognition, and the value of human creativity.

Our Ask

Stepping Out of the Background is more urgent now than ever. Artificial intelligence and digital replicas are raising profound questions about consent, ownership, and whether human performers can be replaced, while productions leaving Los Angeles continue to eliminate jobs and destabilize the local workforce. Background actors are directly affected by these changes, but their voices are rarely centered in the conversation. By sharing their experiences now, the film makes these industry-wide issues personal, accessible, and impossible to ignore.

Principal photography is complete, and we are seeking finishing funds to support the final edit, sound design and mix, archival footage licensing, and festival submissions. We are also seeking acquisition or distribution partners, impact collaborators, and champions who can help the film reach audiences beyond the festival circuit.

Supporting this project means helping preserve the stories of a resilient creative community at a pivotal moment in its history. It also means affirming a larger truth: the working-class people who bring our favorite film and television projects to life deserve to be seen, valued, and protected.
