A Revolution Called Love begins amidst the violence, displacement, and systemic neglect threatening Black life in Washington, D.C and dares to imagine another way forward. The film is inspired by visionary founder Mama Ayo Handy-Kendi, who received a spiritual message in 1993 to create Black Love Day. Conceived as a “wholyday” devoted to ending violence and restoring peace, Black Love Day is built on five tenets — love for the Creator, self, family, community, and the Black Diaspora. Together, they form a blueprint for healing in a divided world. Structured in five cinematic chapters, the film follows Black healers, educators, artists, and organizers who embody love in action. From holistic health practitioners addressing trauma and addiction, to mentorship programs nurturing Black youth through artistic expression, to cultural entrepreneurs transforming festivals into spaces of political awareness and collective joy, each chapter reveals love as strategy, accountability, and healing practice. The journey culminates in a Black Love Relationship Ceremony and Ritual of Reconciliation, where participants lay down burdens and reclaim connection. In a time defined by fracture, A Revolution Called Love insists that the boldest act of resistance is to love — deliberately, relentlessly, and together.
