Mark Thomas Gibson is a multidisciplinary artist whose personal lens on American culture is shaped by his experience as a Black man, a professor, and a lifelong student of American history. These intersecting perspectives drive his satirical and often dystopian explorations of contemporary life through drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, positioning every viewer as a potential character in the narrative. Born in 1980 in Miami, he earned his BFA from The Cooper Union and his MFA from Yale School of Art, and is represented by Loyal in Stockholm. His curatorial work includes Black Pulp! (co-curated with William Villalongo) and the 2024 exhibition Edge of Echoes at Jenkins Johnson Gallery. He has published two artist books and will release his first monograph in 2025 alongside his exhibition Overture at the Berman Museum at Ursinus College. Gibson’s career is supported by residencies at places such as Yaddo, MacDowell, and Ox-Bow, and he is the recipient of major awards including the Pew Fellowship, the Hodder Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant.
