A secret island. An animal disease lab. A political ploy. After 70 years of being off-limits for security reasons, nature has reconquered most of Plum Island. Suddenly, the government wants to sell it to the highest bidder. Who fights back, and why? Plum Island – A Reckoning with Public Land shows what happens when a major victory turns out to be a start-from-here point in disguise.

Thomas Halaczinsky is a German-American documentary producer and director based in Greenport, Long Island. For more than three decades, he has produced and shaped nonfiction films for broadcasters, cultural institutions, international networks, and global brands.
Between 2020 and 2022, he produced and directed the three-part series ARCHIPELAGO NEW YORK for ARTE and ZDF, exploring how nature sustains itself within the New York metropolis; the series received multiple international festival honors. Over two decades, he also produced and directed three documentaries following Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer—DON’T CALL IT HEIMWEH, LATE RETURN, and ARRIVED—tracing her return to Germany and public engagement with memory and history. He has produced feature films, including two directed by Peter Lilienthal, and received an ACE Award for his contribution to the Emmy Award–winning CALLING THE GHOST.
Halaczinsky works selectively as a senior story consultant and producer, advising filmmakers, agencies, and organizations on development strategy, editorial architecture, and long-form storytelling with social and cultural resonance. When projects require full production, he collaborates through his independent company with a trusted network of creative partners.
